A new Google Doodle is
celebrating the 216th birthday of English botanist Anna Atkins with
leaves images, who was the first lady to contribute in the photography.
Anna published her first book
with photographs named Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions in
1843. She published the book with photographic images of plants and botanical
studies and also the concept “sun-printing”.
Anna used iron based chemical
method to create the white images on blue background. She also used the Sun
lighting in the process for effective work. Her technique to develop the images
called “Cyanotype”.
Anna was born in Kent, southern
England, on March 16, 1799; during her entire career she collected hundred of
specimens. Later she donated her entire collection to the British Museum in
1865.
Atkins died on June 9, 1871, at
the age of 72. Anna’s collection and techniques to create photography are still
with us.
