Sudanese woman convicted for apostasy



A Sudanese woman doctor who married a Christian man was sentenced to death in conviction of “apostasy” on Thursday judicial officials said.

The 26 year old Meriam Ibrahim whose father was Muslim but mother was an Orthodox Christian, refused to change her religion. We gave you four days to repent but you did not return to Islam, Judge Abbas Mohammed Al-Khalifa told the woman on Thursday.

Judge said "I sentence you to be hanged to death." And Khalifa also sentenced Ishag to 100 lashes for "adultery". 

Her Christian name is Mariam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag, who is eight month pregnant. When grace period of her expired, she will edict to death. She has lost her emotion when court in Khartoum was giving orders to death. 

According to Sudanese law, marriage into another community observed as crime. Ibrahim and Wani got marriage in a formal church in 2011, and have an 18 month old son, who is with her in jail.  

In law, children must follow their father’s religion. With this statement marriage of Ibrahim consider as illegal. But she told the judge: "I am a Christian and I never committed apostasy."
